Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today said Kevin Doyle is still his No 1, despite Sylvan Ebanks-Blake’s super-sub impact.

Ebanks-Blake’s brace in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Blackpool made it an impressive 11 goals Wolves substitutes have scored this season.

“You’ve got to be ready to come on – they don’t sit on the bench to watch the game and play on their iPods,” said McCarthy.

“They sit on the bench with a view to coming on and saving a game or winning a game — doing something.

“I don’t know whether Sylvan’s was an inspired substitution against Blackpool.

“He came on for Ronald Zubar and it was great for Sylvan but we were all over a team that were down to 10 men and we put a really good striker on who scores goals. His second one was just a fabulous finish.”

Doyle has just three Premier League goals this season compared to Ebanks-Blake’s six and Fletcher’s four.

But Doyle remains McCarthy’s first choice up front.

“Sylvan gets the glory for his goals but Doyle gets my appreciation and my glory for the way he plays every week,” he said.

“Doyle was fantastic absolutely brilliant. I hope he gets more goals but I’m not bothered as long as someone gets them and we stay up.”

“His contribution is terrific — he holds the ball up, he gets us playing further up the pitch, he fights his corner and then he went and played wide right which he did it selflessly as usual, and let Sylv go down the middle.”
