Wolves boss Mick McCarthy insists his side have what it takes to bounce back from their cruel midweek defeat at Bolton and maintain their superb record against the top teams.

McCarthy’s men, who sunk to the bottom of the table due to Ronald Zubar’s stoppage-time error, have already seen off Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool this season and confidence is high.

He said ahead of tonight’s home game against leaders Manchester United: “Nobody turns up here and gets an easy ride and if we play as well as we have in the past it should be a very interesting game.

“If we play to the best of our ability we’re a match for anyone.”

“Everybody knows that the so-called underdog generally performs against the bigger and better teams across the board. We’re no different but we’ve also got a good squad of players who are very capable.”

However, McCarthy admitted that while his own side do not lack in confidence, the same also applies to Sir Alex Ferguson’s men who looked “devastating” in their midweek win over Aston Villa.

McCarthy said: “Whether it’s a good time to play them I’m not so sure. I saw them play on Tuesday night and I thought they were devastating. Sir Alex always says the back-end of the season is the business end.

“Their front four really were awesome. They’re worryingly good but they don’t worry me tomorrow. We have to go out and play like we did against Chelsea and Manchester City. We have to take our chances and not make mistakes.”

McCarthy will stick by Zubar despite his horrendous 93rd-minute blunder at the Reebok Stadium in midweek when his poor back-pass to Wayne Hennessey was intercepted by Daniel Sturridge.
