Graham Turner yet to decide on Jermaine Grandison role

Graham Turner today labelled last season’s Shrewsbury Town Young Player of the Year Jermaine Grandison as an “outstanding” centre-half in the making – but still has an open mind on where the defender will play this season.

The 21-year-old made a big impression at right-back in Town’s promotion-winning campaign from League Two, his first full season in senior football.

Turner still sees Grandison’s long-term future in a central role, but has not ruled out the former Coventry ace continuing at full-back for the looming League One campaign. “Jermaine’s an outstanding prospect and has got terrific potential,” said the Town boss.

“He has got size, power and pace, as well as the ability on the ball.

“We will see what we need. He had a good season at full-back last season and we shouldn’t dismiss his ability to get forward and provide us with chances.

“There is the prospect of him starting at right-back but, equally, you look at central defenders and we are perhaps a little bit light so he may start in there. Ultimately, he will be a central defender and an outstanding one at that. (But) I’ve got an open mind on where he will play. “

Turner, meanwhile, insists further arrivals are unlikely before Thursday’s first pre-season friendly outing at Evesham.

Shrewsbury have already made nine additions in a frantic summer of transfer activity at the Greenhous Meadow.

And, while Turner remains on the look-out for up to two new players – one of which could be a loan – the majority of his work is now complete.

“The nucleus of the squad is there and it is looking very strong,” he added.

“But a couple more additions wouldn’t go amiss.

“I think it might take a little bit longer (than before Evesham) but I’m not unduly worried about that.

“We have got until the end of August when the transfer window closes, so there is plenty of time – even for a situation where we can have a look at the first few games and take stock from there and see what we need.

“If we need further senior additions then that is what we have got to do.”
