Shrewsbury Town today completed a double transfer raid as Luke Summerfield and Rob Purdie joined the club's assault on League One.

Central midfielder Summerfield, 24, rejected a contract offer from his now former club Cheltenham to move to the Greenhous Meadow, while versatile 29-year-old Purdie did likewise at Hereford.

It takes the number of summer signings to six following the arrivals of Darren Jones, Asa Hall, Aaron Wildig and Ryan Doble.

And manager Graham Turner is hopeful more additions will follow shortly, with talks planned with two players with Championship experience over the next few days.

Summerfield, son of former Town player and coach Kevin, began his career with Plymouth, where he played in the Championship, and signed for Cheltenham last summer after having a brief trial spell with Shrewsbury.

“Luke started off his career with a bang playing with Plymouth and looked like he was going to be an outstanding player,” said Turner today.

“During that period he had a spell training with Chelsea and, unfortunately, an injury set him back.

“But I thought he had an outstanding season for Cheltenham last season and looked a player who could play at a higher level again.

“He has got a good range of passing and has got an eye for a goal so that probably completes the trio in there (central midfield) with Matt Richards and Asa Hall.”

Purdie had a five-year period working under Turner at Hereford between 2002 and 2007. He then went on to have spells with Darlington and Oldham before returning to Edgar Street last season.

“Rob is a player I’ve known for a long time and I made a modest bid for him in January,” added Turner.

“He can play in five or six positions and if the squad is going to remain fairly small – and we are talking 20 or 22 players – you need one or two who can play in a variety of positions”

“He’s equally at home at right or left-back, can play anywhere across midfield and off a front player.”

* Shrewsbury’s home League One game with Walsall has been moved back a day to Sunday, October 14 (3.30pm) for live coverage by Sky Sports.

By making budget signings RW and company appear to be taking a massive gamble on retaining town's hard-earned division one status. I sincerely hope they get it right.
