James Collins moves to Swindon Town

Shrewsbury Town striker James Collins today signed a two-year contract with Town’s League One rivals Swindon Town.

Shrewsbury Town striker James Collins today signed a two-year contract with Town’s League One rivals Swindon Town.

The 21-year-old, who was top scorer for Graham Turner’s men with 16 goals as they secured promotion last term, was unveiled at the County Ground this afternoon.

Collins had been offered a new two-year deal to stay at the Greenhous Meadow but has instead opted to join Paolo Di Canio’s side who won the League Two title ahead of Town last season.

Shrewsbury will be entitled to compensation for the Republic of Ireland under-21 international as he is under 24. That will be decided by a tribunal unless the two clubs can agree a fee.

The move means Town have now lost four of the five players they offered contracts to at the end of last season with Collins following Ian Sharps,

Shane Cansdell-Sherriff and Nicky Wroe out of the Greenhous Meadow exit door. Goalkeeper Chris Neal has yet to decide his future.

Collins joined Town from Aston Villa in January 2011 and scored 22 goals for the club.

Silly boy! This is really disappointing and I think is an example of the influence that agents have. I hope James Collins doesn't regret this move but I fear he might,I know we will.

...and on the day this happens the club website's headline is 'looking back at towns successful campaign'!!!!

Perhaps if the club officials put down their champagne glasses for a second and realised that the spine of last seasons squad (minus Richards and Gornell) has now departed - we may have half a chance of staying in league 1.

Come on - give the supporters some hope. To have 1 or 2 reject a contract is something. But this is bordering on embarrasing!!

gone for the money , two championship clubs after him , and coventry city [boy hood city fan] yet goes to swindon . his career was going no where till he came to town ,and this is how he repays us , good ridence collins , hope we get the 400k rumoured for him

baresi frank

good riddance(along with the others)!

in my opinion collins is slightly overated and will come unstuck in div 1.

just thankful we didn't lose gornell because he is quality..message to roland...extend his contract NOW!!!

not too worried about the four who've gone anyway as i'm sure GT will have something up his sleeve.

This is just another story of our time.....the state of play at any level in football for transfers and contracts is very much in the hands of the agent and the player........the increase in quality players at Shrewsbury Town is a product of our increasing abilities to turn ordinary players into better players and this is enevitable if we're to progress as a club as a whole....Turner will find players that want to play for us and improve while they're under our system.

You can't force a player to stay at a club and on the whole most players professional careers are quite short, and they need to grab what they can when they can, Collins and the rest of the players after all only ever came to us in the first place for the same reason....ie: probably the best deal they could get at the time.

Of course we';re all worried, but i have confidence that Turner and Wycherley will do they very best they can, some mistakes will no doubt occur, lets just hope there's a continuation of building rather than dismantling....time will tell no doubt.

Not suprised about this. The others that have gone had served the town well over the past few years and I wish them well. However it remains to be seen how James Collins fits in at the other STFC. Their manager is to say the least different to what he has been used to! Just hope we make a few bob out of it. And sure GT will find someone equally as good.

Collins is welcome to join a big club - however he has joined Swindon ??!!

I do wonder what the details of the contracts we are offering are. They certainly don't seem to be appealing to the players. Whether this is related to agents influence and greed ours is not to know...

We certainly need replacements and it will be interesting to see if those who have moved on make the grade in League One. SCS should do ok but not sure on Wroe or Collins.

Wonder if Neal will stay, probably not seeing as 4 of the other 5 haven't!

A player with tremendous potential and previous rumours suggest he had the chance to play at a higher level. It would appear that Swindon are in a position to offer better deals than some championship clubs and a good chance of further promotion?. In the meantime Town need to get things sorted, it's not looking promising at present.

Swedish Shrews

Collins departure bit difficult to understand in the context of his career development. Can only presume that short-term gains win him [or his agent ]over. Expect to see him in League 2 soon!

daniel

Roland wants to start offering conpetertive wages because to me there is only one reason why collins would go to swindon and thats because our offers are obvoiusly poor.

matt

equally - chesterfield, wycombe etc all got promoted and came straight back down with the same players

perhaps we just need a clear out and get a new squad in

it IS worrying though, the amount of players and indeed people from inside STFC who are leaving including Keith Sayfritz

Woody

The Shrews want to ensure they get quality replacements otherwise they will struggle next season. This means the Chairman will need to offer competitive contracts..... if you pay carrots expect to get donkeys!

Don't panic fellow Shrews, although it is dissapointing to lose 'Collo' after last season's heroics GT's record on the players he has brought since he returned has been superb - he will sort it out.

Who had even heard of James two seasons ago?

Wish him well & grateful for last season, but think he may regret the move.

Terry from the Mersey will step up next season & have a feeling it could be the Tom Bradshaw rennaisance - he has the ability.
