Joe Jacobson confident of Shrewsbury Town cup chances

Full-back Joe Jacobson is confident Shrewsbury Town can repeat last season’s League Cup exploits after being handed a mouth-watering trip to Leeds.

Full back Joe Jacobson is confident Shrewsbury Town can repeat last season’s League Cup exploits after being handed a mouth-watering trip to Leeds.

Town reached the third round of the Carling Cup – now known as the Capital One Cup – last term, seeing off Championship big guns Derby and Swansea who proved one of the big success stories of the Premier League campaign.

They also took the lead at Arsenal before bowing out after a 3-1 defeat and Jacobson is eyeing repeat exploits.

“The run we had in the Cup certainly helped us in the League and hopefully we can do the same again,” said the Welshman.

“Of all the teams in the draw we could have faced, I don’t think there was one with a bigger stadium than Leeds.

“It’s a fantastic draw for the club and the fans and I’m sure they will be looking forward to a great day out.”

Jacobson has twice graced the 40,000-capacity Elland Road and is excited about repeating the experience.

“I’ve played there for Oldham and Bristol Rovers in League One and it’s one of the grounds where the fans are very close to the pitch,” he said.

“That adds to the atmosphere and they were getting 20,000 when they were in League One so I’m sure there will be a big crowd.”

Boss Graham Turner believes Shrewsbury should relish the trip to face one of the stellar names of English football in the week before the League campaign begins on August 18.

“Leeds will obviously be a very tough encounter but I think we’re quite capable of going up there and putting on a show,” he said.

“And if we do, you never know me might just get that little bit of luck which means we can be in the hat for the second round.”

Meanwhile, Town will travel to Blue Square North outfit Worcester City for a pre-season friendly on Friday, August 3 (7.45pm).
