Reviewing a super season for Shrewsbury Town

I think we can forgive Town for their slip-up at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday because overall the season has been fantastic.

We achieved what we set out to do at the start of the season – automatic promotion – and in the end did it comfortably.

And with a bit more luck – especially away at Swindon – we could have been celebrating winning the league. But that’s probably being a bit greedy.

The team has been very consistent all season and to go unbeaten at home in the league takes some doing.

And let’s not forget two very good performances in the cup against Arsenal and Middlesbrough. On another day we could have come out on top in both games.

Turner and his backroom staff deserve a lot of credit as they have put a lot of ward work in behind the scenes to get the players ready for match day.

On the pitch Town’s success has been down to the consistency of the players and having a very solid defence.

The standout players for me have been Sharps at the back, Richards in midfield and Collins up front.

Turner has built a team based on a mix of experience with a lot of exciting young players, which makes the future look very bright.

Seeing everyone celebrate after the final whistle against Dagenham and during the parade on Sunday is what makes football so special.

So we move on to League One and have visits to Coventry and possibly Sheffield United to look forward to.

Next season should all be about survival, although with a few quality additions to the squad over the summer, I think a mid-table finish is a big possibility.

I don’t anticipate too many players leaving. Maybe Ainsworth, McAllister and Regan.

Turner has been to League One before with Hereford and soon realised how difficult it is. Hopefully he can use this experience to ensure we are well prepared.

This is how I rated the players’ performances this season.

Neal (8/10) – One or two minor blips but overall very consistent and reliable.

Smith (7) – Provided a reliable backup to Neal and unfortunate not to play more because of his rival’s form.

Grandison (7) – Fans favourite who enjoys a step-over or two. Not the finished article but will get better.

Regan (6) – Rarely let us down when called upon but don’t think he will ever become a regular in the side.

Jacobsen (8) – Mr Reliable who can still get better, especially going forward.

Cansdell-Sherriff (8) – Versatile and his partnership with Sharps was a key factor to our success this season.

Sharps (9) – Captain fantastic who still has got two good years left in him.

Hazell (6) – Missed a lot of the season through injury but showed glimpses of quality when he played.

Wright (8) – Can drift in and out of games but scored some crucial goals and provides a good attacking threat from midfield.

Taylor (6) – In and out the side but a talented young player who works hard for the team.

Ainsworth (6) – An exciting player to watch on his day but will we ever see it on a regular basis. Too inconsistent for me which raises question marks over his attitude.

Wildig (6) – Town have great record when he starts but doesn’t really produce enough for me.

Richards (9) – Bit of a slow start to his Town career but got better and better and is the type of all round midfield player we have been missing for years.

S McAllister (6) – Doesn’t seem to be a favourite of Turner’s and not sure whether he is any better than a squad player.

Wroe (8) – Very consistent and formed a great partnership with Richards.

Collins (8) – Young, talented player who can still get better and this season’s top scorer.

Morgan (7) – Brings something different to the side and causes lots of problems for defenders. Scored some crucial goals.

Gornell (7) – Another young, talented player who chipped in with a few goals. Too many quite games for me.

Bradshaw – Seems to have taken a step back this season. Maybe sending him out on loan next season will help with his development.

Goldson – One for the future.

Do you agree?

Sharps a 9, sorry but you can only get a 9 if you are a soldier in Afghanistan.
