Seething Shrewsbury Town boss Graham Turner today slammed referee Brendan Malone for “bottling” the key decision in their deflating defeat at Swindon.

Town were beaten 2-1 in their crucial promotion clash at the County Ground last night, but that told only half the story with Shrewsbury livid at the failure of Wiltshire-based Malone to award them a second half penalty.

The visitors were a Matt Richards goal to the good by the time Terry Gornell burst clean through on 52 minutes and was tripped by Swindon’s last man Alan McCormack.

A red card would almost certainly have been a by-product of a penalty, but Malone controversially waved ply on.

That drew a furious response from the normally level-headed Turner who was prevented from venting his anger at Malone on the pitch at the full-time whistle by stewards.

“I’ve been very reluctant to criticise referees over a long career because it’s a difficult job,” protested Turner.

“But you can’t help but criticise this one.

“I don’t know where he has come from, I’ve not come across him before and I hope I don’t come across him again.

“Even the defender said he was ready to walk.

“Everybody in the ground knew it was a penalty and a sending off.

“It was probably the only decision he really had to make and ‘bottled it’ is the right phrase.

“I can’t for the life of me think how he could not give a penalty, a sending off, there is a chance we are 2-0 up and they are down to 10 men.

“It was a big lift for them to get away with something like that and it had a little bit of a downer on us.”

Turner vowed to lift his players – but admitted it wouldn’t be easy.

“There is a dressing room there that is absolutely devastated,” he added.

“We have talked about getting over it ready for training on Thursday but it takes some getting over when you have worked as hard as we have and you come away with nothing.

“But for the vast majority of the game, we had a good shape, passed the ball well and I thought we looked the better side for long periods – by miles.”

Town were today assessing the groin injury to left back Joe Jacobson which forced him off shortly after the hour mark.

What is a Wiltshire-based referee doing in charge of a vital game involving a team from his home county? It just doesn’t make sense and fully explains the deep sense of injustice felt by Graham Turner and all Shrewsbury fans. A letter of complaint in ther strongest terms should go to the Football League, the FA and the referees’ association over this issue because Mr Malone’s decision might well be vital in the final countdown. Despite all this the boys in blue must eliminate it from their minds and redouble their determination to secure an automatic promotion place. Keep going lads – and watch out Crawley when you come to the Meadow next week. That’s when the tide will turn in our favour. Up the Blues – come on Salop!

It wasn,t a penalty!!!! Just watched Sky Sports News and it showed quite cleraly that there was no contact our player stumbled & then fell over. Both Sky reporters agreed that it wasn,t a penalty and the officials made the right decision. Make your own minds up yfrog.com/nesoqz fb.me/JcyNkqT3
I for one thought at the time that it was a certain penalty and red card offence

Surely these things even themselves out over a season. If the penalty had been awarded, there’s no guarantee that it would have been converted. Mr. Turner needs to reflect on his side’s inability to score more than once rather than on a penalty not awarded.

Salop fans need to get over any sense of injustice. We lost the game due to an individual unforced error and failing to take our chances when dominating the game. It’s too easy to blame the ref for our teams own short comings. Town need to start being more clinical in front of goal and concentrate for the full 90 minutes.

As a neutral at the game (Millwall fan), i thought Shrewsbury played extremely well prior to the ‘penalty incident’, after that, they seemed to fall in and give up. Much admiration to the bald bloke in midfield, he was the star of the show.
Dont worry little ‘STFC’, you could well be gaining league ONE football as bar Swindon, you are one of the best teams in that division.
    Keep calm and carry on
    and good luck

Swindon fan in peace: I have to say we all thought it was a penalty too. I haven’t seen it since so don’t know for sure. What I do know is you were easily the best team we have played this season and I wish you luck for the rest of season. I hope you go up automatically (just behind us of course), preferably at the expense of the odious Creepy Crawlies.
By the way, Salisbury may be in the same County as Swindon but is nearly 40 miles away and has its own half decent non-league team so don’t think that was an issue to be honest. On that basis, noone from Machester would be able to referee a game in Liverpool, North West, North Midlands etc.
Good Luck for rest of season

Hey guys, Swindon fan here, you were unlucky last night, I have watched every game at the County Ground and most of the away games, you are by far the best team we have played. Our players are running on empty with so many games in a short space of time, but credit to you, your team worked hard played good football and were the better team for 60 minutes, I think if you keep playing like that you will sneak into one of the automatic spots.

Good luck for the rest of the season…
