Steve Leslie quits Shrewsbury Town
Saturday 28th January 2012, 11:00AM GMT.
Midfielder Steve Leslie has quit Shrewsbury Town to join Blue Square Premier title hopefuls Wrexham.
Town revealed last night that Leslie had agreed a deal with boss Graham Turner to end his contract by mutual consent.
A club statement said: “The manager and the club would like to thank Steve for his work during his time at the club and wish him all the best for his future career.”
Wrexham boss Andy Morrell then confirmed Leslie, who has spent time on loan at Hereford this season, had signed a contract until the end of the season.
Leslie, 24, came through the ranks at Shrewsbury and has made over 100 appearances for the club.
He said: “It’s been a very hectic day. I was training with Shrewsbury and then had a call to say that Wrexham wanted me.
“I had no hesitation because the team is doing well and I just want to be playing football.
“Wrexham is a big club and I’ve heard great things about this place.
“The team have been going great guns this season, so I know I’ve got to play well to get in to the side but I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
All the paperwork was completed in time for Leslie to be involved in the squad for the game against Bath City at the Racecourse.
Meanwhile loan striker Romaine Sawyers has set his sights on becoming the latest West Brom player to make his mark at Shrewsbury Town.
The 20-year-old has joined Town on a one-month loan and was in contention for this afternoon’s deby clash at Hereford United.
He follows goalkeeper Luke Daniels and full-back James Hurst in a line of promising young players who have shone in Shrewsbury colours after moving from the Hawthorns.
“There was a reserve game against Swansea (on Tuesday) and there was a Shrewsbury scout at the game,” he revealed.
“Luckily I played well, scored a goal, and the day after I got the good news that Shrewsbury wanted to take me on loan.
“I spoke to Hursty and he had nothing but good things to say about the club. I spoke to Luke Daniels, who was here a couple of years ago and he still holds the club in very high regard.”
