Chairman hails Shrewsbury Town players and fans
Wednesday 25th January 2012, 3:59PM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town chairman Roland Wycherley has paid tribute to the club’s supporters after they helped roar the team on to an excellent 2-1 victory over League Two leaders Southend United.
The chairman felt the atmosphere generated in the ground played a key role in Town’s success.
“In the context of the whole occasion, I thought it was the best match we’ve had at the Greenhous Meadow since we moved in four and a half years ago,” he said.
“The support the team received was fantastic and played a significant part in helping us achieve an excellent result.
“I must pay tribute to the fans for their backing as their excellent vocal support helped generate a tremendous atmosphere.
“The noise they made was terrific.”
Mr Wycherley also hailed the performance of the Shrewsbury players as they responded so well to the disappointment of seeing striker Marvin Morgan sent off inside the opening half hour.
“I thought the red card shown to Marvin was very harsh but it only served to galvanise both the team and the supporters,” he added.
“It was the day the whole club came together and I was delighted with the end result which was richly deserved.
“Whilst we realised it was three points which have moved us closer to the top of the table, which is where we want to be, we have not won anything yet.
“We are fully focused on the rest of the season which we look forward to with genuine optimism.”
