Town’s biggest win of the season should give the players the confidence to go on and challenge for the title, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.

Town picked up a hard working and deserved win over league leaders Southend despite what seemed to be a controversial red card for Morgan.

Despite the setback Town showed fantastic team spirit to grab the victory which closed the gap with the teams at the top.

I must admit I had thought the title was beyond us, but after recent results, including those of Town’s rivals, I think we are right back in the hunt.

What we need to do is be more consistent away from home and win the games against our promotion rivals…easy.

Regarding the Morgan sending off, I think it is worth Town thinking about an appeal because his absence will be a loss to us.

Apart from the sending off, Town suffered a further blow in the game with the injury to defender Cansdell-Sherriff who could be missing for several weeks.

He and Sharps have formed a brilliant partnership at the back and it such a shame to see it be broken up.

Fortunately we have got Grandison who can play at centre half and it shouldn’t be too long before Hazell is available for selection.

Town will be looking to build on two impressive victories against promotion rivals Gillingham and Southend with a win over local rivals Hereford on Saturday.

On paper it should be an easy three points with Hereford struggling at the wrong end of the table, while Town have enjoyed some success over their rivals in recent seasons.

But Hereford are bound to come out fighting and strange things can happen in local derbies.

Well done the lads….and a massive well done too to the crowd, awesome support which I’m sure put a chill up the Southend team. A very important factor when the chips were down and Candsell Sherriff was carried off.

The spirit of the team impressed me, but more than anything it was the willingness to go forward at every opportunity with a drive and passion, this lit up the supporters and gave a terrific atmosphere to play hard fighting football within.

As i had wished before this game Grandison would step up and start to shine showing what a force he can be when he’s up front….his height, menacing, stop start running and good vision, a class player right now and huge promise for future games…he and Collins led throughout by example, real tenacity all great stuff.

As for the forthcoming Hereford game, beware the ghost of overconfidence, Hereford are fighting for their lives again so it could well be another get on with it and fight hard type match.

What a great Saturday afternoon it was, well done the whole team.
