Graham Turner seeks to bolster Shrewsbury Town defence

Boss Graham Turner is looking to bring a new defender to promotion-chasing Shrewsbury Town before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

But the Town chief insists he is largely happy with the shape of his squad as they enter a vital period of the League Two season.

Shrewsbury host leaders Southend on Saturday and also play high-flying Swindon and Crawley next month – but Turner is adamant that his squad is up to the task, even if he cannot strengthen further.

“I think we might be looking to bring in another defender before the January transfer window ends but I’m not absolutely desperate for any position,” he said.

“I think we have got a fairly decent squad, one that can see us through to the end of the season.

“I wouldn’t think there would be anybody new in for the weekend.”

One area that Turner is certainly not looking to enhance is in the middle of the park, where he is now basking in an embarrassment of riches.

The loan signing of Dave McAllister has added quality to what was already a well-stocked section of the squad.

And the ahead-of-schedule return to fitness of former Torquay man Nicky Wroe has left the manager purring at his midfield options.

Wroe was expected to be out for the first two months of the new year after breaking two metatarsals in his foot during the 3-1 defeat at Bradford over the festive period.

“Nicky has surprised me,” said Turner. “I thought he was just going to join in the warm-up at the back end of last week.

“But he finished off the whole session on Thursday and Friday, and he’s fully fit again.

“It’s almost a luxurious position to be in, with the quality of our midfield players,” added the Town boss.

“Matt Richards is playing well at the minute, David McAllister has settled in well, Sean (McAllister) did well at Middlesbrough (in the FA Cup), and we’ve now got Nicky Wroe to come back in so we’re in a strong position there.”

it is our defence and midfield that are keeping town in touch, what is needed is another striker in preperation for some of our youngsters being loaned out or sold. both bradshaw and collins are up for contract renewal in the summer.

gornell and morgan better start performing soon, lest their rear ends feel the gentle boot of uncle graham!!!

The next four or five games will be the ultimate test for Graham Turners choice of players….I’m the first to sing his praises when he gets it right and will stand behind him too when new players take a couple of games to make an impression but I’m also of the mind that professional footballers regardless of where they have played and for how long in any team they should perform from the word go, otherwise you cannot call them professional footballers…the time for practice in the B team is where getting used to our style should be worked out.

As for the strange situation of our front line…it might well be too late to sign a more prolific professional striker if Turners hopefull’s don’t get it right.

His line in this current article makes me worry at this stage…I quote:

“I think we have got a fairly decent squad, one that can see us through to the end of the season”.

Fairly decent!!, surely by now it should be a very good squad

you are quite right daz, he signed in the summer. both tom and jamie are internationals for wales and eire, when did tom last get a game.

but what strength in depth the team have. candell-sherriff, wright, richards, ainsworth, taylor, gornell, morgan, collins and bradshaw all capapable of scoring.t’is time for a goalfest methinks. if every player did what they were paid to do, graham turner could sip his irn bru through a straw with satisfaction on his deckchair, and our chairman rowland wycherley weighed down by his wallet could put the padlocks back on and retire to the boardroom for a glass or 3 of vintage port.

if only. come you shrews, it is only sarfend. floreat salopia
