Aldershot defender Ben Herd believes Shrewsbury Town could be the beneficiaries if the home fans choose to barrack their former striker Marvin Morgan at the Recreation Ground tomorrow.

Morgan is returning to Aldershot for the first time since leaving under a cloud in the summer – having caused a storm with abusive comments on Twitter in January.

That is sure to make him a terrace target for Shots supporters with long memories, but Herd – is aware of the threat carried by Shrewsbury’s leading scorer.

“Marvin coming back tomorrow will be interesting and we want to keep him quiet really,” said Herd, who is himself a former fans’ favourite at Shrewsbury.

“I think the fans may be on his back a little bit but that may motivate him, knowing the character that he is.

“He is a good player on his day and can be a handful.”

Aldershot have lost their last three games in League Two and Herd is eager to see them get back on track against his old club.

And he believes they can take a lot of belief from the way they performed in the FA Cup last week, where they went out 1-0 to League One side Sheffield Wednesday.

“We need to get our league form back on track, starting tomorrow,” said Herd.

“There are a few good games coming up in December and this will be a good springboard for us to get a result.

“We will take some confidence from our performance versus Sheffield Wednesday and we need to work hard, especially like we did in the first half last week.

“It was disappointing to lose that match – especially to such a soft goal, because we gave a good account of ourselves against a good side.”

Meanwhile, Aldershot have strengthened their side ahead of tomorrow’s clash by signing defender Chris Doig on a month-by-month non-contract basis.

The 30-year-old centre-back has made over 200 League appearances, having represented Nottingham Forest in the Premier League and being named captain at Northampton.

Doig returns to play football in this country after leaving the Cobblers for Australia and then playing in Indonesia.
