Midfielder Nicky Wroe is relishing his role as Shrewsbury Town’s penalty king – but wants to weigh in with more goals from open play.

Three of the 26-year-old’s five goals this season have come from the spot, including one in each of the last two games to help beat Morecambe in League Two and knock Rotherham out of the FA Cup.

He has also developed a happy knack of registering late winners, with four of the five coming in the last 10 minutes of games to earn Town three points.

“I think I went on a run of about 10 games in between scoring so it’s been nice to get a couple, even if they were only from the penalty spot,” said Wroe.

“They’ve been a couple of important ones too, so it’s been nice to put them away when they really matter.

“I only started taking penalties when I was at York and it continued when I went to Torquay,” he added.

“I never really spoke about it at Shrewsbury, Matt Harrold was the penalty taker last season and I didn’t want to unsettle that.

“But he didn’t play against Rotherham away and Mike Jackson (coach) asked me if I fancied them.

“We got one that day which I put away and I’ve been on them ever since.

“I’ve not missed one for Shrewsbury yet and long may that continue but it would be nice to score a few more from open play.”

Meanwhile, Wroe has backed boss Graham Turner to be named as the League Two manager of the month when the award is unveiled on Sky Sports tomorrow morning.

Turner – who led Town to four wins out of four in November – has been nominated along with Cheltenham’s Mark Yates, Paolo Di Canio of Swindon and Barnet’s Lawrie Sanchez.

“He’s a good manager and it will be a big surprise if he doesn’t get the award,” added Wroe.

“He’s got us playing some good stuff and hopefully we can keep this run we’re on going.”

To score from open play requires you get into positions to score them Nicky.

Overwise you’re doing a great job.
