Matt Richards backs Shrewsbury Town to push on

Delighted midfielder Matt Richards has backed Shrewsbury Town to continue cranking up the pressure on the League Two trail-blazers.
Despite reeling off four successive victories – including Saturday’s 2-0 home triumph over Morecambe – and being in the midst of a seven-match unbeaten run, Town remain fourth in the table.
Southend, Crawley and Cheltenham continue to occupy the automatic promotion places, but Richards is confident events elsewhere will take care of themselves should Shrewsbury successfully keep their own house in order.
“We just have to concentrate on our games and keep picking up points, clean sheets and getting results,” said the former Ipswich and Walsall midfielder.
“If we keep beating teams like Morecambe, we will keep climbing up and I’m sure we will be there at the end of the season. Everyone is working hard for each other. We are very close knit as a squad and all have a good understanding.
“People are fighting for their places in every position because the quality is second to none.”
Richards was thrilled with Saturday’s triumph, with a Nicky Wroe penalty and Mark Wright header inflicting a first away defeat of the season on Morecambe, who are managed by ex-Telford defender Jim Bentley.
“It was difficult conditions with the wind swirling but we dealt with it well and put in a very good, solid performance,” added Richards, 26.
“We defended very well as a team. I don’t think they had many chances. We had the better ones and got our rewards.”
Town were today assessing the ankle injury to on-loan Cardiff midfielder Aaron Wildig which forced him off in the closing stages of Saturday’s triumph.
