James Collins plays down Ireland 2012 hopes
Wednesday 16th November 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Striker James Collins insists that a regular place in the Shrewsbury Town side comes way ahead of any fanciful ambitions of playing at Euro 2012.
Collins’ adopted nation, the Republic of Ireland, booked their passage to Poland and Ukraine by completing a 5-1 aggregate win over Estonia last night.
The 20-year-old former Aston Villa youngster, who scored a sensational seven-minute hat-trick for the Irish under-21s only last month, has been touted in some quarters as a contender for a senior call-up next summer.
But the man himself, Shrewsbury’s second top scorer with six goals so far this season, is eager to win his place back in Graham Turner’s side first and enjoy more international success at his age level before looking any further.
“If we qualify for our under-21s championships then that would be a great achievement,” said Collins, who also featured in a 2-0 win over Liechtenstein on Monday evening.
