Shrews unlikely to appeal James Wallace red card
Monday 7th November 2011, 11:00AM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town today revealed it was “unlikely” they would appeal the sending off of loan debutant James Wallace.
The midfield newcomer, who signed on a month’s loan from Everton on Thursday, saw his first start in blue and amber halted after just 24 minutes of Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Dagenham & Redbridge when referee Darren Deadman interpreted his challenge on Jon Nurse as a straight red card.
Town will further study video evidence today but the initial feeling emerging from the Greenhous Meadow today was that prospects of an appeal were fading.
“It is looking unlikely we will appeal,” said Turner.
“We saw it on a laptop coming back on the coach.
“James’s foot wasn’t raised and I think 90 per cent of refs would have given a yellow card.
“(But) If there are any doubts at all, they (the FA) side with the ref’s decision and you could get an extra game if it is considered a frivolous appeal.”
That means Wallace is likely to miss the trips to Newport County in the FA Cup and Northampton in the League as well as the home game with Morecambe.
Town are now likely to have to agree a deal with Everton to extend the deal beyond an initial month if they are to benefit from the potential Wallace displayed in his brief outing on Saturday.
Meanwhile, winger Lionel Ainsworth hailed his side for coping with the numerical disadvantage for more than an hour to register a first victory on the road since September 17.
“It’s a massive win for us,” said Ainsworth, whose side are now back up to fourth.
“To come down here and have a man sent off and play against their style was a fantastic effort.
“We defended well as a team and coped with what they threw at us well.
“It’s a big boost for confidence and it shows we can do it away from home.”
