Shrewsbury Town boost as Newport County FA Cup tie is live on TV
Tuesday 1st November 2011, 1:00PM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town today landed an FA Cup jackpot after their first round clash at Newport County was selected for live television coverage.
Town will receive a broadcast fee of £67,500 after their trip to the Blue Square Bet Premier outfit was picked to be shown by ESPN.
The first round clash will now kick off at 12.30pm on Saturday, November 12, with a further £18,500 on offer for the winners in prizemoney.
The fact Newport County boss Justin Edinburgh is a former FA Cup winner as a player – he lifted the trophy with Tottenham in 1991 after they defeated Nottingham Forest 2-1 at Wembley – is sure to have been an attractive side-issue for television bosses as they mulled over their selection.
County, who are struggling in the relegation zone of the top flight of non-League football, are in the first round proper for the first time since 2006.
The game between FC Halifax and Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday’s trip to Morecambe have also been selected for live coverage.
While Shrewsbury’s first team have to wait well over another week to go under the FA Cup spotlight, the club’s youngsters have their chance tonight.
They entertain Notts County in the first round of the FA Youth Cup at the Greenhous Meadow in a repeat of last year’s second round clash.
County ran out 2-0 winners that day, but Shrewsbury Head of Youth Wayne Evans is hoping to turn the tables.
“It’s a great opportunity for the lads to showcase their ability,” said Evans, whose side were beaten 4-2 by Port Vale on Saturday.
“Our performances have been okay – we have been playing well for 45 or 60 minutes and we just need to be a bit more consistent and cut out the silly mistakes.
“This is the biggest competition we play in and we want to have a good run.”
Tonight’s game kicks off at 7pm with admission £3 adults and £1 concessions.
