Patience key to Shrewsbury Town progress says Ian Sharps

Captain Ian Sharps today saluted “an entire team effort” for Shrewsbury Town re-discovering their defensive resolve – but urged them to be more patient when visiting teams ‘park the bus.’

Town have emerged from a barren run of clean sheets to notch two successive shut-outs.

And Sharps has hailed that improvement as a victory for hard work.

“It’s nice to see it paying off because we did a lot of sessions in the build-up to the Rotherham game on improving defensively,” he said.

“We were conceding too many goals and giving away too many chances.”

“But it was a wonder goal that went in at Rotherham and Accrington and AFC Wimbledon didn’t have many chances at all.

“It’s pleasing and not just down to the back four – the whole team have contributed and you have seen the likes of Nicky Wroe and Sean McAllister getting important blocks in.”

Sharps, however, admitted Town could have done better in their attempts to break down a defensively-minded AFC Wimbledon side in Saturday’s goalless draw.

“We could have stayed more patient and moved the ball quicker at times to create the space and not allow them to get back into position,” he added.

“I’m sure that’s something we will be working on but at least we got a point.”

Meanwhile, Town’s youngsters take centre stage tonight when they entertain Notts County in the first round of the FA Youth Cup at the Greenhous Meadow.

The tie is a repeat of last year’s second round clash when County ran out 2-0 winners at Meadow Lane.

But Shrewsbury Head of Youth Wayne Evans is hoping to turn the tables.

“It’s a great opportunity for the lads to showcase their ability,” said Evans, whose side were beaten 4-2 by Port Vale on Saturday.

“This is the biggest competition we play in and we want to have a good run.”

Tonight’s game kicks off at 7pm with admission £3 adults and £1 concessions.
