I must improve, admits Shane Cansdell-Sherriff

Honest Shrewsbury Town defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff has admitted he must improve on his own indifferent form after a topsy-turvy afternoon at Rotherham.

The Australian was left out of the starting line-up for the draw at the Don Valley Stadium, a decision he had no complaints with after admitting dropping below his usual standards in recent weeks.

But Cansdell-Sherriff’s absence lasted just 27 minutes on Saturday before he was thrown back into battle by a hamstring injury to Carl Regan.

The centre-half responded impressively with a solid display and the equaliser –his first goal of the season –- to earn a 1-1 draw.

And Cansdell-Sherriff is hoping that his hour-long display will prove the catalyst for improved personal fortunes.

“My past performances over the three games before Saturday haven’t been great,” admitted Cansdell-Sherriff.

“I have been making a few mistakes and the gaffer has to make changes when we are not winning.

“I accept that, it’s my fault and I need to improve.

“As it happened, I got a chance to come back and prove myself and hopefully I showed I can do better.

“I won most of my headers, didn’t do anything too stupid and managed to score at the same time.

“I was devastated when I was left out and I was looking forward to the next reserve game so I could prove my worth.

“But I got my chance on Saturday and hopefully that’s a platform for me.”

Cansdell-Sherriff was satisfied to emerge from a lacklustre encounter with a point, and is now hoping Town can cash in on a home double header – against Accrington tomorrow and AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

“We have kept ourselves right in there amongst it with a vital point away from home,” added the 28-year-old.

“Six points at home now would be fantastic.”
