Plenty of pitfalls for when Shrewsbury meet Barnet
Friday 7th October 2011, 7:06PM BST.
Morecambe, Portsmouth, Rotherham, Colchester and Gillingham.
Should Shrewsbury Town require a heads-up on the potential pitfalls of tomorrow’s home clash with Barnet, that eclectic mix of higher ranked clubs and leading lights in League Two provide it.
For while the Bees lie rooted in the bottom four in League Two, eye-catching results on the road against the quintet of sides above show the unpredictable north Londoners are capable of being a force to be reckoned with – when they get it right.
“I still am not sure why we do so well on the road against the bigger sides,” said boss Lawrie Sanchez,
“We have beaten Portsmouth, Colchester and Gillingham in the cups and in the league we have won at Morecambe and drawn at Rotherham.”
The latest triumph in that impressive on-the-road sequence came with a 3-1 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy victory at Gillingham on Tuesday.
But that was proceeded by three successive defeats in the League, at home to Northampton and Oxford and a 4-0 drubbing at Swindon.
“We need to build on last week’s game against Northampton because we played well and should have won,” added Sanchez, who returns to the Greenhous Meadow for the second time after guiding Fulham to a 1-0 Carling Cup victory at Shrewsbury in 2007-8.
“When you look back over the stats, you wonder how we didn’t at least get a draw.
“We were very good in the second half at Gillingham as well so hopefully we can bring that into Shrewsbury.
“But we must improve from the 4-0 loss at Swindon because we offered very little in that game at either end of the pitch.”
Injuries are, however, piling up in the Barnet squad as Jordon Parkes, Darren Dennehy and Ricky Holmes all missed the midweek game against Gillingham.
Right winger Holmes, who is suffering with concussion, would be a major loss should he not recover in time.
