Shrewsbury Town boss Graham Turner believes his side have shown more than enough in the Carling Cup to prove they are genuine contenders for League Two promotion.

The Town chief watched his side put in a fine display against Premier League giants Arsenal, taking a 1-0 lead at the Emirates Stadium before eventually going down 3-1.

But Turner believes there is plenty to take from the performance in the capital, along with the earlier giant-killings of Swansea City and Derby County.

“It will give us confidence for the League,” he said.

“I think we’ve got a lot going forward in the battle for promotion and we showed that against Arsenal.

“I think what we’ve got is a good squad of players. We’ve got a good balance with the pace and mobility and some size and strength to threaten whoever we are playing.”

Turner added he was delighted that the impressive Shropshire away following had the chance to enjoy a Town goal.

“It was a special moment to see the fans celebrating the goal,” he said.

“What we were desperately hoping when you get that sort of following is that they have something to enjoy.

“It’s a pity it wasn’t at their end but the goal going in will have made it special for them and I hope the supporters enjoyed the occasion.”
