Derby day scorer Mark Wright insists he has “nothing to prove” when he makes his first return to old club Bristol Rovers with Shrewsbury Town tomorrow night.

Winger Wright, who was on target in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over near rivals Hereford at the Greenhous Meadow, spent 18 months on Rovers’ books before making his loan switch to Shrewsbury permanent in January.

But he insists he is only focused on helping Shrewsbury build on their current sequence of four successive League Two victories.

“It’s going to be interesting and we will see what happens but I don’t think I will get a good reception,” said 29-year-old, who made only 25 appearances for Rovers.

“These things happen in football.

“You always want to do well against your former clubs but it’s about the team and getting three points rather than me. I haven’t got a point to prove.

“I believe in my ability and I know what I can do and I’m just concentrating on doing well here.”

Wright’s goal – in a victory where Town were forced to play the final 30 minutes with 10 men following Terry Gornell’s sending off – helped Shrewsbury to the top of League Two for two hours on Saturday.

“I always seem to score against Hereford, even going back to when the gaffer (Graham Turner) was there,” he added.

“We were under the cosh a bit when we had 10 men but the third goal made it more comfortable again. It was good to be top for a while but it’s early days and we have to stay consistent.”

With an appeal looking unlikely, Gornell’s dismissal – for a lunge on Hereford goalkeeper Dave Cornell –means he will now be sidelined for the next three games.

And that means the forward will face the heartache of missing next week’s Carling Cup trip to Arsenal.

“Terry has come in the team and done very well,” added Wright.

“His work rate is second to none and it’s a real shame for him.”
