Sharps tells Shrewsbury Town not to rest on laurels

Captain Ian Sharps has demanded on-song Shrewsbury Town don’t rest on their laurels after a three-match winning run streak – as striker Tom Bradshaw made a major international breakthrough.

Bradshaw not only made his Welsh under-21 debut last night, playing the full game, but he scored in his side’s 3-1 defeat in Montenegro.

The 19-year-old gave Wales a 55th minute lead before the hosts turned the UEFA qualifier on its head.

Fellow forward James Collins also earned international honours, playing the final 24 minutes of the Republic of Ireland’s 1-0 under- 21 defeat in Turkey.

Both players are due to return tomorrow to begin preparations for Saturday’s League Two home clash with Hereford (1pm).

And, ahead of that derby, Sharps has urged Shrewsbury to maintain their encouraging run of form.

“We can’t let up,” said the 30-year-old. “We’re on a good run and the standard of performances have gone up over the last few weeks.

“But we have to make sure we keep it that way. A lot of teams will win three games, then lose three and then win another two.

“The big thing in this division is consistency and we have given ourselves a platform to build on.”

Like the team’s fortunes, Sharps admitted he had struggled early on, but has been more satisfied with his own displays of late.

“I think I’ve played better the last few weeks and long may that continue,” he said.

l Town reserves picked up a 1-1 draw in their second outing of the season at Coventry yesterday.

Winger Jon Taylor completed 90 minutes as he continues his recovery from a virus, Town’s goal coming from an un-named trialist.
