James Collins lands Ireland call to stretch Shrewsbury Town
Saturday 27th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Shrewsbury Town could travel without two key strikers for next week’s clash at League Two high-fliers Gillingham – after seeing striker James Collins put on international standby.
Young Welsh forward Tom Bradshaw, who has only just returned from injury, has already been called up for the Welsh under-21s and will certainly miss the trip to Priestfields.
But Collins – who has already scored two goals this season and was likely to be in the Town squad against Swindon today – has been put on the reserve list for the Republic of Ireland’s under-21s.
“It is a great recognition for them and the club but a big disappointment to lose two players from the one position,” said Shrewsbury boss Graham Turner.
“That will stretch our resources, we have Marvin (Morgan) and Terry (Gornell) and the option of Lionel (Ainsworth) dropping in there as well, but if both Tom and James are missing then it will leave few options for us up front.
“We have a small squad with Tom missing for eight days – and I expect James to be called up as well and that will mean he will be away for 10 days.”
Bradshaw will link up with the Welsh squad for their game in Montenegro on Tuesday, September 6.
