Pile pressure on Paolo Di Canio, Turner tells Shrewsbury Town
Friday 26th August 2011, 7:30PM BST.
Boss Graham Turner wants Shrewsbury Town to pile the pressure on controversial Swindon chief Paolo Di Canio tomorrow – but he believes the Italian is in the best place to learn the trade.
The former Juventus, Milan and West Ham star was a surprise choice to take over at the County Ground in the summer after the Wiltshire club’s relegation to Legue Two.
He has not enjoyed the best of starts either, following an opening day victory with three consecutive defeats against Cheltenham, Dagenham & Redbridge and local rivals Oxford United.
But he did mastermind a Carling Cup victory away to Championship side Bristol City on Wednesday evening – and Turner believes Di Canio will be a better manager in the long term for having started in the lower reaches of the professional game.
“He has been a very good player and would have learned a lot from different managers he has played under,” said Turner – whose own managerial career started at Shrewsbury back in 1978.
“At the moment he is a young manager in League Two and that is the best way to learn the trade.”
Swindon arrive at the Greenhous Meadow tomorrow looking to build on their midweek Carling Cup success and start justifying their tag as one of League Two’s promotion favourites.
And Turner is warning Town to be aware of their abilities and to guard against complacency after their own stunning 3-1 giantkilling act against Premier newcomers Swansea City.
He can point to recent history for evidence of the pitfalls as well, having seen his side turn in two disappointing performances at Burton and Oxford after their first round victory at Derby.
“Swindon have had an outstanding victory at Bristol City on Wednesday so we have to be a bit guarded,” said the Town chief.
“In the aftermath of the Derby performance and result, we didn’t do too well for the next two games so we have to be ready.
“I saw them at Bristol City and they played extremely well and could have scored more than one,” he added. “There is a warning there that if we are not 100 per cent, we could pay a heavy penalty and we need the same concentration we had against Swansea.”
