Goalkeeper Ben Smith today warned Shrewsbury Town of the pitfalls of a Carling Cup hangover – as Tom Bradshaw received new international recognition.

While striker Bradshaw has been called up for a possible first Welsh under-21 appearance – which is set to rule him out of the trip to Gillingham on Saturday week – attention was turning to the visit of Paolo Di Canio’s Swindon this weekend.

Town are still riding high after Tuesday’s stunning Carling Cup triumph over Swansea.

But Smith has urged his side to avoid a repeat of the aftermath of their last giant-killing upset over Derby in round one, which was followed up by Shrewsbury having to settle for a combined one point from the trips to Burton and Oxford.

“A win like Tuesday does wonders for confidence,” said the 24-year-old, who would love a third round meeting with his boyhood team Newcastle United.

“But we must make sure that we don’t do the same as after Derby when we had two bad results in the League.

“We need to be switched on for Saturday because it’s another massive game –Swindon have had a rocky start and we need to take advantage of that.”

Bradshaw has been named in the 18-man Welsh squad for the away UEFA under 21 qualifier in Montengero on Tuesday, September 6.

Now recovered from the knee injury he sustained in pre-season, Bradshaw is due to meet up with his international team-mates next Wednesday which would force him out of the trip to Gillingham.

“It’s mixed emotions because it’s great to represent your country but I’m desperate to do well here and stake a claim at Shrewsbury,” said the 19-year-old, who has been injured for his two previous under-21 call ups.

Bradshaw has spent the last month sidelined with a knee injury.

“The recovery has gone well and I’m feeling fit and sharp,” he added.

Forward James Collins is on stand-by for the Republic of Ireland under 21s for their games at home to Hungary next Thursday and in Turkey on September 6.
