So who fancies a trip to Old Trafford? Chelsea at the Meadow, anybody? How about Liverpool away?

Yes Shrewsbury Town fans, the dreaming can continue for a little while longer yet.

For all sorts of tantalising third round prospects have been thrown up by a mesmerising Carling Cup victory over Swansea.

More than eight years on from Everton and all that, Shrewsbury are at it again –claiming a Premier League scalp on a night when heroes and memories were created.

Maybe it’s the Kevin Ratcliffe factor. The man rightly lamented for taking Shrewsbury through the Football League trapdoor was at the helm for that tasty triumph over the Toffees.

And he was back in town last night, making made one of his infrequent visits to the Greenhous Meadow on media duty.

Ratcliffe couldn’t fail but be impressed as even the sublime away triumph over Championship victory machine Derby in the previous round was eclipsed.

Swansea may have made nine changes from the side that played out a goalless draw with Wigan on Saturday to earn their first top flight point.

But this, nevertheless, remained a side packed with players who had shone in the Championship last season and who have graced Premier League and international stages.

And the sight of, amongst others, record £3.5m signing Danny Graham playing 90 minutes and England under 21 regular Scott Sinclair desperately trying to save south Wales blushes late on emphasised the Swansea determination to progress.

Marvin Morgan, Mark Wright and Nicky Wroe provided the goals to create a final result which didn’t flatter Shrewsbury one jot.

Morgan’s close range finish on 19 minutes provided the finishing touch to a flowing move which saw Jermaine Grandison, Wright and Lionel Ainsworth combine to allow the forward a simple tap in for his third Carling Cup strike of the season.

Wright’s 67th minute finish – clinically fired into the bottom corner from 20 yards – provided a flashback to his scoring exploits of last season and owed much to a canny Terry Gornell burst down the left flank.

And the clincher from Wroe, in injury time – after Swansea had enjoyed decent spells of pressure in the proceeding 10 minutes – saw the same corner of the net bulge after he drilled home a free kick from just outside the box.

Town’s attacking raids could have brought greater success. Morgan – who had a good penalty shout turned down – headed an inch-perfect Joe Jacobson cross against the bar while he and Terry Gornell were also denied by Jose Moneira and Wroe saw a goalbound shot deflect just over.

But while there was plenty to admire about Shrewsbury’s attacking pl-ay, a disciplined defensive display should also not be forgotten.

It would have been easy for Town to be dragged out of position by the probing, possession game which has become the an integral part of the Swansea DNA.

But each Town player knew his own role and the limiting of space in key areas meant Ben Smith enjoyed one of his quieter nights of the season so far.

Indeed, Swansea were forced to rely on a helping hand for their ninth minute lead which arrived when the unfortunate Shane Cansdell-Sherriff saw a headed clearance from a searching Andrea Orlandi ball creep into the bottom corner.

That Town should claw their way back from that potentially optimism-puncturing early blow was testament to their performance, and the only other genuine scare came when Joe Allen’s 30 yard dipping effort was well tipped over by Smith with the score at 2-1.

Yes, there was no doubting Graham Turner’s men were worthy winners. And, after victory over Derby and now Swansea, who could discount another notable scalp in round three?
