Sean McAllister grabs Shrewsbury Town chance
Monday 22nd August 2011, 11:48AM BST.
Goal hero Sean McAllister is hoping a first victory of the League Two season can prove the launchpad to Shrewsbury Town’s campaign – and his own Greenhous Meadow career.
The former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder took full advantage of his first start since January 8 to fire his opening goal for the club he joined in the summer of 2010 in Saturday’s 2-0 home triumph over Crewe.
And McAllister is hoping that can prove the catalyst for a strong run from Graham Turner’s side.
“At times you could see in the last few games there has been a bit of a lack of confidence,” admitted the 24-year-old, who walked off with the man-of-the-match champagne.
“But you need wins to bring you that so hopefully it’s a starting point.
“We know we have got quality in the side and we want to build on this and aim for the goal of promotion.”
McAllister was one of four players introduced by boss Graham Turner on Saturday after the disappointment of the midweek defeat at Oxford.
And, after having to bide his time for a start, he is now hoping for a sustained run in the side.
“I felt I had a good pre-season and I was a bit gutted not to get the nod in the first game, as all footballers are,” said McAllister.
“Saturday was really pleasing and to get my first goal for the club was a bonus.
“Hopefully I have just put a little seed in the gaffer’s mind that I can go on from here and this can be a bit of a turning point for me.”
Shrewsbury’s attention is now turning to the visit of Premier League Swansea for tomorrow’s second round Carling Cup tie.
“There’s no pressure on us and it was similar to the Derby game,” added McAllister.
“They are well renowned for being a passing side so it should be an attractive game and we can display our ability.”
