Terry Gornell hopes to pose Shrewsbury Town a dilemma

Thrilled Terry Gornell is hoping his first Shrewsbury Town goal has handed manager Graham Turner a major selection dilemma for tomorrow night’s trip to Oxford.

The 20-year-old forward came off the bench to grab a late equaliser for Town at Burton in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at the Pirelli Stadium.

The form of Marvin Morgan and James Collins – who have both struck twice in the first week of the campaign – has left Gornell restricted to brief substitute outings so far.

But the former Accrington frontman is hoping breaking his goal duck has has given Turner food for thought as Town bid for their first League victory of the season.

“Hopefully I’ve given the manager a massive (selection) headache,” said Gornell, who saw his pre-season programme restricted by an ankle problem.

“I just have to keep my head down and keep working hard and try and make the most of every opportunity that comes my way.”

Gornell was delighted to salvage a point for his side.

“It’s always good to get your first goal for a new club because the longer it goes you can put pressure on yourself,” he added.

“But the most important thing is it got a point for the team and hopefully we can build on that and get the first win.”

Turner is encouraged by the early scoring impact of his strikers – and is now hoping that will spread through the side.

“All the strikers are capable and, we have also got Tom Bradshaw who always looks as though he is going to score a goal,” said the Town boss.

“We have a history of goals from wide positions with Mark Wright, Lionel Ainsworth and Jon Taylor, and Matt Richards got eight for Walsall last season.

“You need those goals but we had one or two free-kicks and corners go in on Saturday that we need to do better from if we are going to get goals through the team.”

Town will make the short trip to Walsall in the first round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in the week commencing August 29.

Kelvin Lomax, the right back who spent the final five months of last season with Town, has signed for Barrow in Blue Square Bet Premier.
