Jubilant Shrewsbury Town boss Graham Turner today hailed his Carling Cup heroes after their historic victory at Championship big guns Derby.

Town were 3-2 winners at Pride Park in what is believed to be the first time they have defeated higher ranked opposition on their own patch in either of the two major domestic knockout competitions – the FA and Carling Cups.

Two first half strikes from Marvin Morgan and one from James Collins saw Town storm into a 3-0 lead, before they withstood a second half fightback from Derby.

And Turner was delighted with the way his new-look side showcased their talents in the grand surroundings of Derby’s 34,000 all-seater stadium.

“It’s not only winning through, it was the manner of the performance and the quality of the game,” said the Town boss.

“That is testimony to us and the strength that League Two will be this season.

“We play a nice brand of football which wouldn’t be out of place in a higher division.

“It was a terrific performance and has given us a lot of confidence for the season ahead.

“It was nervy in the end and we made it so ourselves.

“But overall, I have to be pleased with the way we played with the ball which was excellent.

“We passed it brilliantly and created a lot of good chances.

“Apart from the odd occasion we defended against good quality Championship players quite well.

“I thought we were a real handful for them and deserved to go through.”

Two-goal hero Morgan said the victory ranked as one of his career highlights.

“We had to dig deep at the end but it was a good performance and a great result,” said the former Aldershot frontman.

“It is up there with my best nights in football.

“The goals were pleasing. On Saturday against Plymouth, I missed some chances I should have taken.

“But as a new striker at the club, you want to get your goals nice and early so you don’t snatch at chances so it’s pleasing.”

Town will learn their second round opponents tomorrow night when the draw takes place live on Sky after the televised game between Sheffield Wednesday and Blackpool.

They could be pitted against one of 13 different Premier League clubs – those not involved in Europe – including Liverpool or two former Midlands clubs managed by Turner, Wolves and Aston Villa.
