Winger’s 15-goal target for Shrewsbury Town

Winger Lionel Ainsworth has vowed to fulfil his promise at Shrewsbury Town this season – and set himself an ambitious 15-goal target.
The 23-year-old wideman got the nod over home-grown talent Jon Taylor to play on the right flank for Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Plymouth Argyle in the opening game of the League Two campaign.
And he is now determined to justify manager Graham Turner’s faith by cutting out the inconsistency which restricted him to just 21 starts last season and becoming more prolific in front of goal.
“The fans have still got a lot more to see from me,” said Ainsworth, who signed from Huddersfield a year ago.
“Last season I scored nine goals and that was an achievement for me as the year before I didn’t score any.
“This season I’ve given myself a target of scoring 15 and that’s what I want to achieve but I have to make sure I keep working hard and creating chances to keep my place.
“I’ve played up front and on the wing but as long as I’ve got a shirt on my back I’ll play anywhere. I just enjoy my football and hopefully goals will come with it.”
Meanwhile, boss Turner admitted there was a mood of frustration in the Town camp on Saturday.
James Collins’ 69th minute goal looked to have got Shrewsbury off to a winning start but they were pegged back by Carl Fletcher’s 90th minute equaliser.
“There was an air of depression in the dressing room and a feeling that we should have won it,” said Turner.
“But we’ve got a nice game at Derby (in the Carling Cup) to look forward to tomorrow – they beat Birmingham on Saturday so it promises to be a hard game.
“The games come thick and fast at this stage of the season so the players can’t dwell on things for too long.”
