Matt Richards targets glory with Shrewsbury Town
Wednesday 3rd August 2011, 11:44AM BST.
New Shrewsbury Town midfielder Matt Richards insists he has not taken a step backwards in leaving Walsall – and has set his sights on a League Two winner’s medal.
Former Ipswich Town ace Richards, 26, was an ever-present for the Saddlers in their League One campaign last term but did not take up the offer of a new contract at the Banks’s Stadium.
He has joined Shrewsbury after impressing as a trialist in the 2-0 win over a Wolves Development XI and believes ahead of Saturday’s big kick-off against Plymouth that he is at a club that can quickly take him back to the third tier.
“I have played a fair few games in the league above and hopefully I can bring my experience to bear here and we can get the promotion that the club have been looking for over the last few seasons,” said Richards.
He made 138 appearances for Ipswich before joining Walsall in 2009.
“I had an offer to stay at Walsall but we couldn’t come to an agreement so there was unfortunately a parting of the ways.
“I haven’t looked back since coming here though, and I’m very happy.”
