Matt Richards may be the man for Shrewsbury Town
Saturday 23rd July 2011, 11:30AM BST.
Shrewsbury Town boss Graham Turner is pondering a move for former Ipswich and Walsall midfielder Matt Richards.
The 26-year-old, who made 138 appearances for Ipswich and played all 46 of Walsall’s League One games last season, featured as a trialist in Town’s 2-0 win over a young Wolves XI last night.
Richards – who scored eight goals in that ever-present campaign for the Saddlers – is a free agent after rejecting a new contract at the Banks’s Stadium and has the necessary experience for which the Town chief is looking.
He was one of two trialists to appear last night, with former Macclesfield, MK Dons and Bristol Rovers right-back Carl Regan, 31, getting a second chance to impress after playing in the 2-1 win over a Manchester United XI last week.
“Matt’s got a lot of experience but, crucially, he’s missed the first part of pre-season,” said Turner.
“I think he can get better but we’ll see how it all evolves.
“I’ll contemplate the situation with Carl and Matt over the weekend and speak to them again.
“They have both done reasonably well and they’re both in contention for further involvement.”
Shane Cansdell-Sherriff and Marvin Morgan got the Town goals last night, while new recruit Terry Gornell made his first appearance since joining from Accrington Stanley.
Gornell’s transfer has been a protracted affair, with the two clubs yet to agree a transfer fee – and Turner admits they are no closer to a resolution.
“We haven’t concluded anything yet so we’re still working on that one,” he said.
“It’s a possibility that it could finish up at a tribunal. I hope not, but I’m quite prepared to go to a tribunal if we need to.”
Goalscorer Morgan came on for Tom Bradshaw after just 25 minutes, the Welsh under-21 international limping off with an injury.
“It was just a little tweak of the knee and we’re not quite sure how bad it is,” said Turner.
“It will be assessed on Monday.”
