Shrewsbury Town striker James Collins aims for 15 goals
Thursday 21st July 2011, 11:30AM BST.
Expectant Shrewsbury Town striker James Collins is hoping to push through the 15-goal barrier in his first full season in senior football.
Collins scored 14 times last season, five during a loan spell at Burton before adding a further nine following his permanent move from Aston Villa to Shrewsbury in January.
Now, with the prospect of a full season ahead of him, the 20-year-old is aiming to exceed his efforts from last term.
“My aim is always to try and do better in the coming season than I did in the last,” said Collins, who looked sharp and found the net in the 2-1 victory over a Manchester United XI in Town’s only public outing on Sunday.
“I got 13 last season and I wasn’t playing first team football until October.
“If I can get past that this season, I will be pleased.
“I feel fit and strong and I’m looking forward to the season starting.”
Collins, however, is aware his first battle is to secure a place in the starting line-up.
The departure of Matt Harrold to Bristol Rovers has been offset by the signings of Terry Gornell and Marvin Morgan.
And, with Tom Bradshaw to throw into the mix as well, Collins is well aware competition is fierce.
“Terry is coming back from injury now so there are four of us trying to get the two places,” he added.
“Everyone is looking sharp so I think the gaffer (Graham Turner) is just going to make his decision based on who gets the goals and performs best in pre-season.”
Collins is likely to feature in tomorrow’s home friendly with what looks set to be a youthful Wolves XI.
The visitors are set to include former Town loanee David Davis but it is unlikely homegrown ex-Shrewsbury midfielder Dave Edwards will feature.
