Mark Wright backs Shrewsbury Town to succeed
Tuesday 19th July 2011, 3:12PM BST.
Sharp-shooting winger Mark Wright has backed Shrewsbury Town’s revamped squad to rise to the challenge of a stronger League Two this season.
Wright believes the introduction of relegated duo Bristol Rovers – his former club – and Swindon, as well as promoted moneybags Crawley will crank up the quality in League Two when the action gets underway on Saturday, August 6.
But he is confident Town – boosted by the arrival of Reuben Hazell, Joe Jacobson, Terry Gornell and Marvin Morgan and with the promise of more additions on the way – can again be a real force to be reckoned with after losing in the play-off semi-finals last term.
“I think it will be stronger this season,” said the 29-year-old.
“You have got clubs like Bristol Rovers and Swindon and there are a lot of players from League One signing for clubs in our division.
“But I think our squad looks good and we can do well.
“It’s early days but the new lads have got quality and have settled in well and we have played some good stuff against Tranmere (in a behind closed doors game) and Manchester United.
“We have the experience of last season and we don’t want to miss out on promotion again.”
Wright has recovered well from a summer hernia operation, one which only left him absent from the main squad for the first two days of pre-season training at the end of last month.
But, after scoring 14 times to top the Town goal charts last season, the former MK Dons and Walsall man is putting himself under no pressure to repeat those heroics again.
“My main aim is to perform well for the team and the goals are a bonus,” he added.
“To get 14 from out wide last season was really pleasing but I just want to do a job for the side and hopefully a few goals will come as well.”
