Shrewsbury Town hope to seal Accrington’s Terry Gornell deal
Tuesday 5th July 2011, 11:18AM BST.
Shrewsbury Town are hoping to complete their attacking armoury for the 2011-12 campaign by sealing the arrival of Terry Gornell from Accrington Stanley.
Town have agreed terms with the 21-year-old but, under the Bosman Ruling, must now reach a settlement on a transfer fee with their League Two rivals who had offered Gornell a deal to stay at Accrington.
Should an agreement not be thrashed out between the two clubs, a tribunal would be used to decide the fee.
“I would like to think we can agree a fee,” said boss Graham Turner.
It is understood Town are still waiting for a valuation from Accrington for a player who began his career as a trainee at Tranmere.
Gornell signed a 12-month deal at Accrington last summer having previously spent a spell on loan at the club in 2008.
He scored 13 times in 40 starts last season as, like Shrewsbury, Accrington we-re beaten in the play-off semi-finals.
Gornell was heavily linked with a move to Scottish Premier League side Inverness Caledonian Thistle but, providing there is no hitch on the fee, Shrewsbury have won the race for the youngster’s services.
“Terry did a good job for Accrington last season and he has got a decent goal scoring record,” added Turner.
“He has still got a lot to do because he hasn’t played that many League games.”
Should the deal be finalised, Town could begin the season with four out-and-out strikers with Gornell joining fellow new boy Marvin Morgan and the existing pair of Tom Bradshaw and James Collins.
Gornell’s arrival would also represent Town’s second summer raid on Accrington after they signed left back Joe Jacobson last week.
