Reuben Hazell is third Shrewsbury Town signing
Thursday 30th June 2011, 11:33AM BST.
Experienced defender Reuben Hazell today checked into the Greenhous Meadow to became Shrewsbury Town’s third summer signing.
The 32-year-old, who was captain at League One Oldham last season, is predominately a centre half but can also slot in at right back.
He has signed a two-year contract with Town.
Hazell, who has made 371 career starts in all competitions after starting out as a trainee at Aston Villa, was offered a 12-month contract extension by The Latics but wanted the extra security of a two-year deal.
He follows Accrington Stanley left back Joe Jacobson and Aldershot striker Marvin Morgan into the club, with his arrival coinciding with the start of pre-season training.
“We are very pleased with the signing,” said boss Graham Turner today.
“Reuben will add some good experience to the group and has played a lot of League games.”
After leaving Villa as a youngster Hazell – nephew of former Wolves and QPR defender Bob – moved on to Tranmere, where he played in the 2000 Carling Cup final at Wembley against Leicester.
He also had stints at Torquay, Chesterfield and Kidderminster before his four-year stay at Oldham began in 2007.
Turner will continue his attempts to strengthen his squad further with his attention now focused on recruiting one more defender – most likely to be a right back – and bolstering the midfield and striking departments
Meanwhile, Town today began their six week countdown to the new season in earnest by returning to pre-season training.
“We will get straight into it with ball work, fitness work, weights and core strength exercises,” the Town boss added. “It’s good to have the lads back in and there is always a bit of a buzz about getting started again.”
Town’s fitness work will continue tomorrow with a run up Haughmond Hill.
