Shrewsbury Town to play Derby County
Thursday 16th June 2011, 3:29PM BST.
Shrewsbury Town were today handed a glamour Carling Cup first round trip to Championship big guns Derby County.
Town will go head-to-head with Nigel Clough’s Rams side – who finished 19th in the second tier of English football last season – in the opening week of the season, with the ties due to be played on the week commencing August 8.
It will be Shrewsbury’s first ever visit to Pride Park and will see Town do battle with former captain Ben Davies.
The midfielder, who spent three years with Town, signed a two-and-a-half year deal with the Rams in January after moving from Notts County.
The clubs met in the Carling Cup in 1995-96, with Derby progressing 4-2 on aggregate in the third round.
Shrewsbury – then led by Fred Davies – were beaten 3-1 at home before securing a 1-1 draw at Derby’s former Baseball Ground home in the second leg.
Town will be hoping to match their Carling Cup exploits of last season, when they produced a thrilling Greenhous Meadow victory over League One Charlton – coming from 3-0 down to win 4-3.
That set up a second round trip to Premier League outfit Stoke City, where Graham Turner’s side acquitted themselves well before being beaten 2-1 by their hosts and eventual FA Cup finalists.
