Shrewsbury Town shot-stopper Chris Neal has vowed to put a difficult season behind him and renew his challenge for the No1 jersey in 2011-12.

Neal nailed down a starting position in the Town team which finished fourth in League Two for much of the first half of the season.

The 26-year-old made 25 appearances in all competitions but has not been seen at first team level since the 1-1 draw at Barnet on January 15.

The consistent form of replacement Ben Smith left him kicking his heels for the remainder of the campaign, but Neal is hoping for better fortunes next term.

“It’s always hard to take when you’re not playing and that’s been the same for me this season,” said the former Preston man.

“It didn’t happen for me with injuries last season but this season I think I only missed one training session.

“Ben Smith had a good second half to the season and was very consistent.

“I will have a word with the gaffer (Graham Turner) to see what his thoughts are.

“Everyone wants to play first-team football but I love being part of this club.”

Town, who have indicated they will send a youth team to TNS for the Shropshire Senior Cup semi-final, have brought forward their pre-season home friendly with Tranmere by one day to Friday, July 29 (7.30pm).
