Departing striker Jake Robinson today admitted the “writing had been on the wall” for his Shrewsbury Town exit.

News that the 24-year-old forward had been released from the Greenhous Meadow emerged yesterday when boss Graham Turner confirmed he would not be offering the forward a new contract.

But Robinson acknowledged his Town future had long been in doubt after spending the second half of the campaign on loan at Torquay, who ended Shrewsbury’s promotion dream in the play-offs.

“I guess I expected it,” said Robinson, who scored nine goals for Shrewsbury and seven for Torquay last season.

“It’s still disappointing when it happens because things didn’t work out at Shrewsbury as I would have hoped.

“But I suppose the writing has been on the wall for a while.

“There was never a fall-out with anybody up there.

“The manager obviously had a different view of the team, without me in it, and that’s a decision he has to make and happens in football.”

Robinson is now focused on finalising his future plans and revealed there had already been contact from other clubs.

“I’ve had some interest from League One and League Two,” revealed the former Brighton forward.

“I will see what offers come of it and take everything into account because it’s a big decision for me.

“It’s not a nice time when you’re without a club but that’s part and parcel of football and it’s an exciting challenge as well to think what lies ahead.”

Robinson admitted he will reflect on his two seasons at Shrewsbury with mixed emotions.

“On the non-football side of it I loved living in Shrewsbury – it’s a lovely place,” he added.

“On the football side of it, there were ups and downs. Scoring a hat-trick on the first day of last season (against Bradford) was a personal highlight and the team highlight was probably coming back from 3-0 down to beat Charlton 4-3 (in the Carling Cup).

“Both seasons started great for me but the end of my first season and the middle part of last season were both disappointing.”
