Shrewsbury skipper haunted by Town’s failure

Captain marvel Ian Sharps today admitted he perceives Shrewsbury Town’s promotion near miss as a failure.

Last night’s goalless draw with Torquay at the Greenhous Meadow spelt the end of a nine month promotion mission as Town crashed out of the play-offs at the semi-final stage 2-0 on aggregate.

And a candid Sharps — who battled through the pain barrier to complete 90 minutes — admitted Shrewsbury had fallen short of their target.

“Everyone gave it their all but we haven’t been good enough in the two games,” said the 30-year-old Scouser.

“It’s disappointing to say the least.

“You can look back over the season and point to different things, but we failed in what we tried to do.

“I see it as a failure because I came here this season to get promoted and it hasn’t happened.

“Other people might pretty it up but, at the end of the day, I think we have failed.”

Sharps admitted Town could have few complaints about being defeated by Torquay over two legs, and was left to rue missing out by a solitary point on automatic promotion.

“I was in the play-off situation last season with Rotherham where we got to the final and got beat,” he added.

“I thought this year we would go on and win it but it wasn’t to be.

“We can’t do anything about it now but we have to learn from the season because we have let some stupid points go.

“It would have been easier to get one extra point in the season to get automatic than win the three games we needed to in the play-offs so it’s important we learn from it.”

Sharps completed last night’s encounter after a week of intensive treatment on a thigh injury sustained in the first leg a week ago.

“I was cramping up near the end but I got through the game,” added the former Tranmere man.

“I didn’t think I was far off being 100 per cent fit. The specialist has worked miracles on it this week and I would like to thank him.

“But it’s not about me. It’s about Shrewsbury Town not getting promotion and it’s gutting to say the least.”

the captain has no need to feel haunted. shrews problem is not with the players or managemement, the problem rests firmly within the boardroom and rowland wycherley and the board.
in 4 years since the ruddy awful lenny the lion badge was introduced shrewsbury have won nothing nor are they likely to with that awful pop art lenny the lion badge.
shrews successful future is entirely in the hands of the board, as rowland tots up the money available to graham turner, he should pause and think am i spending this money wisely whilst retaining that ruddy awful badge. please restore towns good luck with a badge of 3 loggerheads and a floreat salopia and a fat cheque for graham. then town will win the league next season and without one hand or that ruddy awful badge tied behind their backs. you know it makes sense rowland. floreat salopia and god speed the shrews

I’ve always wondered why the teams play nearly 40 games over the year and finish fourth they don’t go up, when a team that finish below them go up. Time to do away with all these play off games or make them fair and the bottom teams have play offs to see who goes down.

You’ve all done exactly what the manager brought you in to do, which in a different set of older rules would have been enough and got us promoted, but it’s not and it’s really of course only the top three that go up, plus a bonus of a lottery suicidal lottery fourth position, this season we were that fourth ridiculous position.

I think Turner and all the fans know that we’ve ultimately found it hard to sign a top striker, no because we can’t afford one but because the agents and the top strikers would probably prefer to go to a bigger more credible club….on paper that is.

Lets hope next season Turner and the board has enough credible clout to change this situation otherwise we are likely to have another season of a razor blade of difference between us and the teams that can attract such strikers. That has essentially been the only let down this season, everything else has been fantastic.

Keep going Town, believe as we as fans all do, but without that magical gifted striker we will always been in the land of luck versus rather than a complete squad of all the position covered by the right signings, we all know it and the last time we had such a player was Holt, give us such a player and we won’t be touched and will go up with the type of squad we otherwise now have.

Roll on Monday and the talks and the real decisions about are real potential for the future, you can’t fool the real fans we know overall true talent up front when we see it signed and delivered.

Stop pussy footing about and invest and get one, then nobody but nobody will stop us.

Good luck with that Turner and the board, we’ll all be behind you if you achieve it.

I don’t think the badge is the reason STFC will be spending another season in league two..
