Boss backs Shrews’ inner steel for play-offs
Friday 13th May 2011, 11:30AM BST.
Boss Graham Turner today backed his Shrewsbury Town squad to display the inner steel to cope with the unique pressures of the play-offs.
Town will put their entire season’s efforts on the line during the League Two play-offs which begin with a trip to Torquay tomorrow night for the first leg of the semi-final.
But Turner is confident his side can rise to the occasion to keep alive their promotion dreams.
“We have had a good week in training and everyone is looking sharp and ready to go,” said Turner.
“The test comes at 5.45pm tomorrow night and you are looking for players to perform in the heat of these games.
“I’m confident the players have got the characteristics to cope with the pressure and we showed that in front of a big crowd against Oxford last Saturday, particularly with the response in the second half.”
Despite the magnitude of tomorrow’s occasion, Turner has stuck to the preparations which have served Town well over the closing two months of the season.
“We have just carried on with things as we have been doing,” he added.
“The level of training in the early part of the week was quite intense and then towards the end of the week, we have done more functional stuff ands making sure everyone knows what their jobs are.”
Meanwhile, Turner has revealed that the plans for next season – including the offering of new deals for out-of-contract players – will be shelved until after the final game. “It’s a delicate situation and everything will be left until after the final match, whenever that might be,” he added.
* Just over 600 of Town’s 1,100 allocation for the trip to Torquay had been sold for tomorrow’s clash at the start business today.
A bumper crowd looks assured for next Friday’s home leg at the Greenhous Meadow with more than 6.000 tickets sold in the home ends for the return.
