Jame Constable: My face didn’t fit at Shrewsbury Town
Friday 6th May 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Shrewsbury Town old boy James Constable insists he has nothing to prove when he returns to his former club for the first time tomorrow.
While Town’s defence are on a run of four successive clean sheets, they will be wary of the threat of Constable who completed his permanent move to Oxford – following a season-long loan – in 2009, after falling out of favour with then-boss Paul Simpson.
During his three seasons at the Kassam Stadium, Constable has scored 69 times, including 17 this season and twice against Town in Oxford’s 3-1 victory in the first meeting between the sides this term.
“I’ve got nothing to prove,” said the 26-year-old. “I think I started something like seven games there and got four goals.
“The supporters were great to me, it was just that my face didn’t really fit in. I came here and it’s turned my career around.”
Oxford, unbeaten in five games, want to finish their season on a high, even if it means spoiling Shrewsbury’s party.
“We’ve done well the last four or five games to stay unbeaten and we want to finish unbeaten,” Constable said.
“We go into the game full of confidence because we’ve been playing really well.
“We thought it might come down to being more significant than it is for us, but we want to continue our good run, and we want to finish on a high.”

A shocking decision by Simpson to let him go – just one of many. Let’s hope he doesn’t come back to haunt us tomorrow.
