Defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff is hoping fortune will favour Shrewsbury Town in Saturday’s promotion crunch.

And he also admits Wycombe’s potentially decisive ‘goal that never was’ still rankles.

Town trail Wycombe by one point heading into Saturday’s concluding round of League Two matches and must better the Chairboys’ result to snatch the third automatic promotion spot.

The fact these two sides are going head-to-head for third spot has brought in to focus the controversial decision by linesman Richard Wigglesworth to award Wycombe an equaliser in March’s 1-1 draw between the sides at the Greenhous Meadow.

Video evidence subsequently proved that Gareth Ainsworth’s effort didn’t cross the line that day and Shrewsbury would have had a two point advantage heading into the final day had they held onto that 1-0 lead.

But defender Cansdell-Sherriff is hoping the wheel of fortune will now spin in Town’s favour when they entertain Oxford and Wycombe host Southend.

“You can’t dwell on the past and decisions like that are what you have to accept in football,” said the Australian. “The officials probably haven’t thought twice about it since but it could turn out to be crucial against us in terms of automatic promotion.

“We also conceded a last minute equaliser at Wycombe (in a 2-2 draw in September) so maybe we are due a bit of luck going our way on Saturday.

Cansdell-Sherriff admits the anticipation is building ahead of the big weekend.
