Shrewsbury stars help Norwich to Premier League
Tuesday 3rd May 2011, 6:31PM BST.
The man who broke Shrewsbury Town hearts in the play-offs in 2009 has fired Norwich to the Barclays Premier League.
Simeon Jackson scored a last minute winner as Gillingham beat Town in the League Two play-off final at Wembley.
And he again scored the only goal of the game for the Canaries at Portsmouth last night to guarantee them promotion from the npower Championship.
He will be joined on the big stage by former Shrewsbury striker Grant Holt and defender Marc Tierney, who both suffered play-off heartache with Town.
Both have been key members of Paul Lambert’s team that have secured back-to- back promotions for the Carrow Road men.
Skipper Holt, who has spearheaded the promotion push with 20 League goals, was full of praise for his boss.
“The manager has been fantastic. He’s a motivator and has been great for us,” said Holt, who remains Shrewsbury’s £170,000 record signing.
“We’ve got a fantastic bunch of lads here. We’ve worked hard and I think when we’re ‘on it’ there’s no team better. We’ve a great team spirit and a great desire. It’s a joy being with each other every day.”
Jackson has scored nine goals in his last seven matches after suffering relegation with Gillingham last season.
Norwich’s promotion comes six years after they were last in the Premier League, and was possible after nearest challengers Cardiff City surprisingly lost 3-0 at home to Middlesbrough in the afternoon.
That meant Norwich were guaranteed promotion behind champions QPR if they won at Portsmouth – and they did 1-0.
