Shrewsbury Town’s sights set on top three
Monday 2nd May 2011, 11:37AM BST.
Shrewsbury Town today launched what could prove the biggest week of their recent history by pledging to push Wycombe all the way to the promotion line.
Town were left deflated on Saturday when their 1-0 triumph at Cheltenham was cancelled out by Wycombe’s surprise 3-1 triumph at League Two title chasers Bury.
It means the impetus remains with Wycombe in the head-to-head-battle for the final automatic promotion spot.
The Buckinghamshire club will be promoted should they see off Southend at home.
But any slip-up would open the door for Town who entertain Oxford and must better Wycombe’s result to launch their own promotion party.
“Wycombe are in the driving seat but all we can do is win our home game and hope a result goes well elsewhere,” said boss Graham Turner.
“We are still breathing down their necks and if there is any slip up at all, we are still in there.
“You do get some surprises in the last match of the season.
“They go into it under pressure knowing nothing less than a win will suffice providing we do our jobs.
“They have to assume we will win so it just adds a little bit for them.”
Turner’s view was echoed by the players who are refusing to give up hope of a top three finish.
“All we could do at Cheltenham was win the game which we did and we have to do the same next weekend,” said winger Mark Wright, who scored his 13th goal of the season at Cheltenham to secure an 11th away League victory.
“It’s in their hands but you never know what will happen.”
Wright has been promoted twice from League Two in the past with MK Dons and Walsall but revealed: “I have never sealed it on the last day so it would be brilliant to do it.”
