Shrewsbury Town promotion bid goes to wire
Monday 2nd May 2011, 10:12AM BST.
Town did their job but it was a shame Bury couldn’t do the same, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
So the long and gruelling season has come down to the wire to decide where Town will be playing their football next season.
Town did what was required of them on Saturday despite Cheltenham giving us a good game in the 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from player of the season contender Mark Wright.
All eyes then turned to the result of the Bury and Wycombe game which unfortunately did not turn out in our favour.
What was even more impressive with Wycombe’s victory was that it came against a team who still have ambitions of winning the title.
Credit must also go to the Town players. They have hit form at the right stage of the season and one defeat in nine speaks volumes, featuring some impressive defensive displays.
So what does it all mean? Town just need to better Wycombe’s result this Saturday, aided by our superior goal difference. Easy!
On paper both Town and Wycombe have got winnable homes games against mid-table opposition.
Town face Oxford while Wycombe play Southend.
A word of caution though. These games are not a foregone conclusion as we lost 3-1 to Oxford in the reverse fixture, while Wycombe lost 3-2 to Southend in theirs.
Unfortunately both opposition teams have got nothing to play for this season, so it makes you wonder whether they will be really up for the games.
On the other side of the coin pressure will be on Town and Wycombe to deliver and it could come down to who handles it better.
All Town’s players can do is focus on their own game, do their job on Saturday and then at the end hope Wycombe have chocked.
Whatever happens on Saturday it is going to be a nail-biter for the fans and let’s hope come 5pm it is our fans who will be chanting “we are going up”.
I refuse to discuss the play-offs in this blog because I am confident we won’t need to worry about it after Saturday.

it is now out of towns hands. it was in their hands away to shots, away to gulls and at home to accrington. town blew it and are now relying on wycombe. town will never win anything with thar ruddy awful lenny the lion badge. so come on change back to 3 loggerheads and a floreat salopia, otherwise shrews will always be the bridesmaid.
