So can this pulsating League Two promotion race throw up yet another twist?

Shrewsbury Town fans will desperately be hoping so after an Easter weekend which veered from the elation of Hereford to the frustration of Accrington in two stomach-churning days.

Ordinarily, a four point haul from that pair of fixtures would represent a pleasing return for Graham Turner’s side.

But it hasn’t been quite enough to prevent it becoming ‘slight advantage Wycombe’ in the race for the third automatic promotion slot.

Shrewsbury would dearly love to still have their fate firmly in their own hands, rather than relying on the win-and-hope strategy they must now carry into the final week of the regular campaign.

All, however, is not lost.

Not least because Wyc-ombe’s next assignment comes away against a Bury team who can still add the championship cherry to the promotion-sealing icing they applied at Chesterfield yesterday.

But it is now looking increasingly likely that six points from their remaining two fixtures is a must for Shrewsbury to give themselves a realistic chance of overhauling Wycombe.

And, for that to become a reality, Town will look to repeat their second half display from yesterday rather than their disappointing first half showing.

For much of that opening 45 minutes, the home side were on the back foot against an Accrington side who showed why they have been beaten just once in the last 17 outings – and drawn 13 times on the road.

The visitors certainly carried the greater attacking threat in those early stages and it took a superb double save from Ben Smith to deny Luke Joyce and Sean McConville to keep the hosts level at the break.

Amid signs of growing tension in front of their biggest crowd of the season, Town failed to find their passing radar or attacking flow during that first half.

To their credit they were to improve markedly after the break with Accrington’s defence by far the busier.

Half chances came and went with Tom Bradshaw’s dipping 30 yard effort and an edge of the box effort from James Collins only fractionally too high.

A cross-cum-shot from Matt Harrold – who like Mark Wright made an impact from the bench — also sparked momentary panic in the Accrington defence when goalkeeper Alex Cisak parried, before the visitors mopped up the danger.

But for all Shrewsbury’s huff-and-puff, they couldn’t muster the moment of inspiration to carve out a clear opportunity.

It means Town can’t clinch promotion at Cheltenham on Saturday and they must now focus on getting their fate back in their own hands ahead of the final day battle with Oxford.

Yes, Town are going to have to do it the hard way.

But after 17 years of trying for a promotion within the Football League, it was never going to be easy.
