Blog: Shrewsbury Town had it, then lost it

Blog: As quick as it was in our own hands – it was gone again, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
If you wondering, I am talking about automatic promotion.
On Saturday afternoon Town fans were chanting “we are going up” as we had got ourselves in pole position of securing third place following the 2-0 derby victory at Hereford.
More than 48 hours later, and following the 0-0 home draw with Accrington, the tables on Town’s season had turned once again with Wycombe now seemingly favourites to secure the final promotion spot.
It’s not all doom and gloom as one big factor in Town’s favour is our superior goal difference which could still play a major part come the end of the season.
The Hereford game was perfect. Clean sheet, brilliant defensively, hard working in the middle of the park and clinical up front.
Backed by a brilliant away following the players responded, with Sharps and Collins particularly outstanding.
Another great crowd on Monday, but this time not the result we were hoping for as Town endured a frustrating afternoon against promotion-chasers Accrington.
Whether Saturday’s game took its toll on the players I don’t know, but the players seemed to lack the sharpness they showed against Hereford and were unable to break down the Lancashire side.
So two games to go and all to play for, with Town very much relying on other teams to do us a favour.
On Saturday Town visit a Cheltenham side who are languishing in 17th with seemingly nothing to play for, although mathematically relegation may still be a possibility.
On paper it looks easy, but pressure will be on Town’s players to get a result. A repeat of the result and performance we produced against Hereford will be the order of the day.
Elsewhere Town fans will also become Bury supporters for the day and will have their fingers crossed the newly-promoted team will beat Wycombe.
Fans should take hope from the fact Bury can still snatch the title from under the nose of Chesterfield.
With the finishing line in sight, Town’s fans are needed more than ever to get behind the boys. It will be worth it!
